This piece will show at the Mexic-Arte Museum, for their upcoming group exhibition titled, Alimento Para el Alma / Food for the Sol. The show explores the theme of food and its ability to bring families and communities together. This piece is inspired by the Silence = Death poster created by artist Avram Finkelstein and the Silence=Death Collective. A piece that was a mobilizing cry for an urgent response to the AIDS epidemic.   This artwork has drawn many to political activism, a transformative piece that has collectively united the masses as individuals and as a culture. Experimentation within new mediums is one of the elements I try to incorporate in my creative process as it only further develops my art practice. Spray paint is a medium where I experience spontaneity. The flow of marker to paper easily translates from a spray can to a wall, or any surface I choose to spray paint on.Spray paint is one of my favorite mediums to work with, and naturally makes me think of Graffiti. Ancestors are always with us. Death is not an end but rather a gateway to the realm that is the afterlife. After experiencing the Dia de los Muertos celebration in Oakland, I felt inspired to create a drawing that captured my sentiments on the celebration and tradition.  The skull is reminiscent of a skull mask I saw an Azteca dancer wear while they danced in ceremony in celebration of Dia de los Muertos.
